Houppelandes were the height of fashion in the late 14th to mid 15th Centuries, and were the last truly universal dress style in Europe.  By the middle of the century, most of the countries had shifted to their own unique styles of gowns, though most men's outfits were variants on the houppelande. They used a large amount of fabric and were very full, pulled in by a belt worn at the waist.  They were also occasionally seen with a loose belt near the hip.  The men's Houppelande varied in length from mid-hip to floor length. Generally, the shorter versions were worn by younger men and pages, nobles wore them below the knee, and scholars and royals wore them at floor length or trailing.  The sleeves ranged from loose sleeves, to open sleeves that trailed on the floor, often with a dagged edge.  The necklines were varied.

I offer the open sleeves (angel) sleeves in three lengths, bag sleeves, and loose straight sleeves.  Necklines are currently available as a simple open neck or with a standup collar.  Fabric choices range from linen, to silk, wool, and varying levels of brocades.

This gown does not come with a belt, but if you are looking for reproduction pieces, you can find  Belt Ends and  Belt Mounts and more at  Armour and Castings. (opens new tab)  Another good option is  Raymond's Quiet Press.

The pictures include period illustrations I use for my research, as well as some examples of finished houppelandes.  The last two pictures are of my Sartor reproduction fabric houppelandes.  First two are sold, last two will be getting fur added before being posted for sale.
